Netley Sailing Club makes RYA Club of the Year Award 2020 shortlist

20 December 2019

Boating lovers in the south now have a chance to help one of the Clubs in their very own region to be on its way to winning the RYA Club of the Year.

Netley Sailing Club has been recognised as a finalist in the prestigious 2020 RYA and Yachts & Yachting Club of the Year Award, supported by Gallagher.  As a nominee,  Netley SC now goes forward to the national vote and that’s where you can help.  Voting opens today (13 December) so please give them your support by casting your vote at

The annual Award recognises the outstanding achievements of sailing clubs across the UK and promotes the hard work and dedication that goes into running a successful club.  Netley Sailing Club is one of 10 finalists selected by the RYA Awards Panel and a finalist can be turned into a national winner if enough votes are received, and your support can make this happen.

As well as the Club of the Year nomination Netley SC has been specifically recognised with a special award for its ‘Fantastic Facilities’.  Netley’s new clubhouse opened in August 2018 after a huge effort by club members, and thanks to their efforts the club is now able to hold more events and host class national championships.

The club reached this major milestone having purchased the site freehold in 2012. The building work was funded by membership loans, donations and 15 years of fundraising activities.

The efforts of the members didn’t stop there either – once the builders moved out the members themselves moved in, decorating and fitting out the interior ensuring that the project was brought in under budget.

The new building complements other facilities such as the camping field and training shed. Despite the focus on the new clubhouse, the club at the same time expanded its activities, reaching out to local schools, increasing social activities, and renting out club windsurfers and dinghies as well as succession planning. Because of all of this, club membership has seen an increase of 17% over two years, with members now having to trim back the hedging to make room for extra dinghy parking.

“We’re delighted to be able to announce this year’s finalists.” said RYA Programmes Manager Michelle Gent. “The Panel was inspired to see how much activity goes on in clubs all year round and the number of volunteers who go that extra mile to make it all happen. It’s been exciting to see the varied initiatives clubs are using to increase activity and engage their membership”.

Rob Peake, Editor of Yachts & Yachting said: “We had a tough time whittling down the high standard of entries this year to the shortlist you see here, but the tougher task is now yours! Yachts & Yachting is delighted to be supporting this competition, which recognises the hard work of club volunteers and shares best practice between clubs.”

Awards will be presented and the overall winner will be announced at the RYA Dinghy Show 2020 on Saturday 29 February. Cast your vote for Netley Sailing Club at

Voting closes on Monday 27 January 2020.
