Walcon completes redesign and rebuild of Basin No.2 at Tewkesbury Marina

29 June 2017

Walcon Marine, the market leader in the design, construction and installation of yacht marinas and harbours, has completed the total replacement of the pontoons and piles in Basin number 2 at Tewkesbury Marina on the River Avon in Gloucestershire, England. The project included a redesign of the marina to allow the efficient accommodation of the narrowboats and the wide-beam barges that are popular on the river.

The new marina has retained the basic layout of the original with four piers coming out from a walkway running along one side of the basin. However, both sides of one of the piers and a single side of the pier next to it have been fitted with a total of 17, extra-long finger pontoons that are mounted at 45° to their piers. These allow up to 36 canal boats and barges up to 18 metres (60 feet) in length to berth safely and securely, with minimal loss of area for other boats. They also simplify entering and leaving the berths by reducing the amount of manoeuvring required to come alongside. The remaining 78 berths are designed for motor cruisers and other craft up to 9 metres (30 feet) in length.

As well as building and installing the new piers and finger pontoons, and fitting the services, Walcon was responsible for removing the old pontoons and piles and insertion of the new piles. The client arranged the required dredging. Walcon’s System 21 pontoons were used throughout, totalling 1,240 metres in length. This popular and durable design uses a galvanised steel frame with a hardwood deck supported on fibre concrete floats, and is widely used in both fresh and salt water environments.

Simon Amos, Marina General Manager at Tewkesbury Marina, commented: “Over the last ten years Tewkesbury Marina has worked with Walcon Marine to replace all of the pontoons in two basins as well as the river moorings on both sides of the River Avon. For Basin 2 we again used Walcon’s System 21 pontoons, which we have been very pleased with from the installation in Basin 1 in 2007. They have also supplied an aluminium bridge, which looks superb.

“It has been a pleasure working with Walcon again. From the initial planning of the refurbishment to the removal and replacement of the pontoons under their watchful eye, the Walcon staff have been excellent in every aspect. They were well organised and very efficient and tidy whilst carrying out their work. Their on-site foreman ensured the job ran very smoothly and was carried out within the timescale.”

Tewkesbury Marina is a privately-owned company, and with nearly 400, fully serviced berths in three individual basins it is one of the largest inland marinas in the UK. It provides direct access to two major rivers; the Avon and the Severn. Walcon Marine is proud to have been working with Tewkesbury Marina for nearly 50 years.
